Künstlerhaus

Künstlerhaus Wien was founded in 1861 by the Society of Fine Artists, making it the oldest artists' association in Austria. At a time when the art scene was strongly dominated by state-run academies, the founding members created an independent platform that allowed artists to exhibit their works free from academic constraints. The association played a key role in the development of the Viennese art scene and contributed to the establishment of new artistic movements.

From the very beginning, Künstlerhaus became an important center for exchange between national and international art movements. Landmark exhibitions took place here that shaped the Jugendstil, Classical Modernism, and later contemporary art. Prominent artists such as Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, and many others presented their works here, contributing to the international significance of the institution. Throughout the 20th century, Künstlerhaus was also a place of artistic experimentation and societal debate, where new forms of expression were tested and established art concepts were questioned.

After several renovations and an extensive redevelopment, Künstlerhaus reopened in 2020. In addition to being used by the Society of Fine Artists, the building now houses ALBERTINA MODERN, providing an even broader access to modern and contemporary art. Despite this institutional expansion, the association remains a central force behind the artistic direction of the venue, continuing to advocate for the promotion of innovative and socially relevant art projects.

The exhibition program of Künstlerhaus encompasses a wide range of artistic media – from painting and sculpture to photography, media art, and interdisciplinary projects. Through regular collaborations with artists, collectives, and institutions, exhibitions and events are created that address current social and artistic issues. In addition to the changing exhibitions, Künstlerhaus is also committed to supporting emerging artists, fostering experimental formats, and actively engaging in the dialogue about the role of art in a changing society.

With its over 160-year history, its long-standing artists' association, and its unwavering commitment to artistic innovation, Künstlerhaus Wien remains one of Austria's central institutions for contemporary art and a vibrant space for critical discourse and creative engagement.
