Arik Brauer Art Collection

Arik Brauer was an influential Austrian artist known for his vibrant and surreal paintings, as well as his work as a musician and poet. Brauer's art is characterized by its bold colors, intricate details, and fantastical imagery. His paintings often feature dreamlike scenes populated by whimsical characters, mythical creatures, and symbolic motifs. Drawing inspiration from sources as diverse as folk art, medieval iconography, and Viennese architecture, Brauer created a distinctive visual language that defied easy categorization.

In addition to his work as a visual artist, Brauer was also a talented musician and songwriter. He was a founding member of the Vienna-based folk rock band "Die Schmetterlinge" (The Butterflies), which gained popularity in the 1960s and 1970s for their eclectic blend of music styles and satirical lyrics.

Brauer's impact on the cultural life of Vienna extended beyond his artistic endeavors. He was also involved in urban planning and architectural projects, advocating for the preservation of Vienna's historic buildings and the creation of public spaces that reflected the city's rich cultural heritage.

Throughout his long and prolific career, Brauer remained an influential figure in Austrian art and culture. His paintings are celebrated for their imaginative vision, technical skill, and profound emotional resonance. Today, Brauer's work can be found in museums, galleries, and private collections around the world, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire and captivate audiences for generations to come.

Born in Vienna in 1929, Brauer became a prominent figure in the Viennese art scene, particularly as part of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, a group of artists who emerged in the post-war period. This Austrian movement shares some similar traits with Surrealism, as it also adopts mysterious symbols, but Fantastic Realism shows the fantastical events in a realistic tone and real-life style, which was different from the abstract art that was popular at the time. Another founder of Vienna School of Fantastic Realism is the famous Austrian artist Ernst Fuchs who is also featured in our app.
